The Lebanese
society is the result of multiple and complex historical and cultural
heritage.
Our intention is not to agree on a unique origin, or on a
particular or subjective view of our history. But to accept our historic
and geographical realities, objectively and without prejudices or
chauvinism:
-
We live
in the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in a specific place
called Lebanon, which is an integral part of the territory that the
“ancient Greeks were the first to call Syria.”
-
The
colonizing countries have artificially created the actual states of the
region, after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, and the overthrow of the
Arab revolution. With time, these states have gained true legitimacy,
and authentic individuality.
-
Our history, as well as our future is linked to that reality.
It is not so much important to determine if we are all Arabs or
Phoenicians, or if we are of multiple origins. It is imperative to accept
our reality that we all belong to the territory where we live, where we
share history, and where we must flourish.
Despite
all the mystifications and appearances, Lebanon is not a nation yet.
We
are still in an elaboration phase.
Our hope is to accomplish and
concretize an innovative idea of the Lebanese identity.
A new concept
that should transgress the confessional loyalties, and aim to change our society
in accordance with the interests and aspirations of all our people.
We must
seek the cohesion of all the religious communities in a genuine
multicultural and non-confessional society.
Today the
existence of our country is a need, and an obligation.
Not only for reasons related to our past;
It is for
our future, and for a new vision of that future.
